Song of the Day - Asia - Valkrie

I just have to close the loop on this little Asia kick I've been on. So Wetton/Downes/Palmer/Howe started Asia and eventually came back together for the reunion album Phoenix in 2008. That was an absolutely *stunning* album. I loved it right away. Up to that point I'd enjoyed the John Payne version of Asia but hearing John Wetton back at the helm made me realise what I'd really loved in the original Asia albums. So I would be picking something off Phoenix right now but Ruth has forbidden me from doing that for a couple of weeks at least. So instead here's the lead single of their 2014 album Gravitas. It's also a kick-ass album and was the first to feature Sam Coulson on lead guitar after Steve Howe retired from the band due to heavy work pressure from being in both Yes and Asia and that being a bit too much for a chap who's getting on a bit. Fair play I guess.

Song of the Day - Asia - Feels Like Love

So this is the second main generation of Asia. The post Wetton years saw John Payne take lead vocals and honestly he's got a pretty great voice. I know it's not a popular view but I quite like the Payne era Asia and they're still performing as Asia now I believe even though John Wetton got the original Asia back together, kinda. Curse you Steve Howe.

So this is one of the better songs from the Payne era in my opinion. All the songs on this album, Aria, are pretty good. I remember listening to it endlessly when it came out. Sadly it didn't sell to well, though.

Song of the Day - Asia - Don't Cry

I was looking at Asia thinking I really wanted to pick something from them. Loved them for years and years and finally got to see them live last year. Bucket list thing for me.

Anyway Alpha was the first Asia album I heard. I bought it cause I liked the album cover. I was shallow back then. :) But then I was looking through the list of tracks and how the hell do you choose? Every song on that album is a worthy pick. And then I started searching YouTube and discovered this gem. OMG I had no idea there was a music video for Don't Cry. And it's an awesomely bad Indiana Jones rip off featuring bad acting, bad special effects and some sets worthy of early Doctor Who. And I realised another thing too. Steve Howe has always looked old.
