This tall red brick building, the Folsom Powerhouse, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Fed by the American River, this hydroelectric plant was put into operation in 1893 until 1952. It houses four 750-kilowatt electrical generators, driven by four McCormick dual turbines with a capacity of 1260 horsepower, delivering power to Sacramento, California 22 miles away.

Located in the Alabama Hills just west of Lone Pine, California, Mobius Arch is a favorite for photographing sunrise, sunset, astro, and people. It is popular for capturing the mountains of the Sierra in its archway. In this photo I've included both Lone Pine Peak at 12,949 ft (3,947 m) on the right and Mount Whitney at 14,505 ft (4,421 m) on the left. Mount Whitney is the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States. However, it is set back in the Sierra so it appears to be shorter relative to Lone Pine Peak standing out in the front row.

Now I know why California's Pinnacles National Park fills up every weekend: views like this on the hiking trails. I was out early so I could get this panorama and include the trail. As I was coming down I passed many going up, and the parking lot was full.
