One of the locations in Northern California I like to go for sunset is Lake Siskiyou, where a great reflection of Mount Shasta is visible on calm evenings. This was not one of those calm times. So I framed the shot having part of the surface of the lake visible to catch the light, but the primary subject would be Mount Shasta. The clouds to the west blocked some of the sun's rays, casting dappled light on Mount Shasta and its foothills. I like the way nature always challenges me to be creative.

In reading reviews about Northern California's Castle Lake, one word came up in almost every one: "beautiful". I agree wholeheartily with that description, and that's why I titled this photo and the related blog "Beautiful Castle Lake." This small lake is in the Trinity Mountains located in Siskiyou County California. Castle Lake is a tarn (lake) formed by glacial activity some 10,000 years ago during the Pleistocene Era. Today it is a jewel which attracts those who are looking for a restful and peaceful spot. It's a place I love to go to ... and capture some of its beauty in my photography.

There are several Crater Lake boat tours available, and they are the only way to get on the lake unless you're a ranger or a researcher. Wizard Island formed after the collapse of Mount Mazama, while the lake filled with rain and snow melt. The animals on the island made their way across a land bridge, which flooded as the lake rose, leaving them to develop as unique sub-species. The island is accessible by shuttle boat and has a trail leading to the top of the cinder cone, where you look can look into the 90 foot-deep crater.
