#Cactus on #galapagos are interesting. Galapagos islands are forming by underground volcanic eruptions.
Initially nothing can survive. Then somehow the lava cactus start growing.

Over thousands of years these volcanic fields are transformed into fertile grounds. The #lavaCactus no longer survives on these islands
but #CandelabraCactus start thriving.

The islands are also home to lizards and these CandelabraCactus have thorns to protect themselves.

The lizards don't climb the cactii but wait patiently for the ripe fruit to fall. This could be a long time, weeks or months.

Once the cactus fruits fall to the ground the lizards dash over and fight
for the fruit.

When we got there a fruit had just fallen and one lizard #iguana had grabbed it. Another fought with it and grabbed half out of it's mouth.
Very interesting event to watch.

It's an interesting ecosystem - volcanoes create new land, cactii break down the lava to rock, more cactii provide food for iguanas and sea birds.
