Yes, #snowLeopard, it is a big cat in the mountains but it is also a title given by the
Russian Mountaineering Federation to those who have climbed all 5
peaks above 7000m in the former Russian republics.

Outside the #Himalayas and #Karakorums there are only 5 peaks above 7000m in the world. They are all in the former Soviet Republics.

There are no mountains outside Asia higher than 7000m.

Originally there were only 4 peaks but one, #KhanTengri was 6995 m but with snow cap it is 7010m so it is included.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…

I was trying to do some of the 7 summits peak and I met a Polish/British climber who introduced me to this series/list.

We planned a climb together of #PikLenin which is considered the easiest of the 5. Note the communist sounding name of the mountain.

After the breakup of the Soviet Union, most of the mountains were renamed to local names, some went through several naming rounds.
See dashburst.com/cozylaye… for a similar exercise in #Alaska which coincidentally was also part of Russia.

While we were there a #skyrace was organized there.
It is a race where runners adjust to altitude for several weeks and
then try to climb the peak in one day. The winner usually running it
in 5 hrs or less. An impressive feat.

Due to weather, we didn't summit, also the race was diverted to a nearby peak. So, I was introduced to the term #skyrunning and the groups that do it. Something for me to try in future :)

The Sky Running association had wanded the trail with their flags which made our job easier :)

I love Pik Lenin and Kyrgyzstan. The trek from #baseCamp to #advancedBaseCamp the #landscape turns from green lush fields to red rocks to gravel to mud and finally to snow.

The first picture has all the elements plus a rainbow.

NAME THAT MOUNTAIN:
----------------------------------
1st picture (mostly rocky) is an unknown peak near #denali.
Picture taken from Float plane before Mt. Hunter (#mthunter) just before turning right to land on Kahiltna Glacier in #Alaska.

2nd picture is of the landing strip on #Kahiltna #glacier.
Landing strip has a great view of Hunter (known as #Begguya which means child of Denali and Sultana by natives), #Sultana (known as wife of Denali) and McKinley (known as Denali by natives which means the big one)

Sultana is one of the native name for Mt. Foraker. #mtforaker

Hunter was erroneously named by a government surveyor who thought it was the same mountain a climbing team had climbed and named it.
The mountain that the team climbed and named Hunter is now known as Kahiltna dome.

3rd picture is of Mt. Hunter/Begguya in the distance. There is an aircraft manager tent in the picture on the right. The left space is the actual landing strip. To the far left is the mountain visible in 2nd picture.

4th picture is of Foraker/Sultana taken from Landing strip

5th picture is of Mt. Foraker/Sultana. It is taken from the 14,000 ft high camp of Denali and some tents are visible.

6th picture is of the West Buttress (#westbuttress) of Denali/McKinley taken from 16500 ft.

7th picture is of the #summit flag on Denali at 20320 ft. The flag has a leave no trace (#lnt #leaveNoTrace) message on it.

McKinley and Foraker were both Senators from Ohio. #McKinley never set foot in Alaska and I doubt Foraker did either.

The state of Alaska changed McKinley back to Denali as the locals and climbers used that name and never got used to McKinley.

However the National park did not change the name till 2015. #Obama went to Alaska for the ceremony. While there he was a guest on Bear Grylls' (#BearGrylls) survival TV show.

In terms of altitude Denali > Sultana > Begguya.
However in terms of difficulty: Begguya/Hunter > Sultana/Foraker > Denali/McKinley.

For this reason Hunter sees no attempts many seasons.
Foraker sees about a dozen attempts every year and many seasons no successful summits.
About 1200 people attempt Denali every year and roughly 50% succeed in sumitting it every year.
