The Social Media Wars [INFOGRAPHIC]

Social media has become an essential part of our daily lives, but, with so many networks out there fighting for our attention which networks are we really using? Overall, 72% of adults over the age of 18 used a social network in 2012. Currently Facebook is still the most popular site with 62% of adult global Internet users actively logging in, with nearly half of these users active on Twitter too.

In the U.S, Facebook has more of a stranglehold where 67% of adults use the site, compared to just 20% usage for LinkedIn, 16% for Twitter and 15% on Pinterest. Pinterest was the fastest growing site, though, with an 88% increase of users over 2013. Tumblr, recently purchased by Yahoo for $1.1 billion, is also growing pretty fast with an increase of 74%. Some of the other notable new arrivals include Snapchat (350 million posts daily), Vine (acquired by Twitter) and WhatsApp (300 million users).

Active Internet users spend more than one-quarter of their time on social networking sites. The average user spends 8.3 hours on Facebook each month, whereas by contrast Google+ usage has less than seven minutes clocked. Facebook is still the most popular site with teens as well, but has witnessed a 10% drop in young users who are now flocking towards other sites like Instagram (bought by Facebook for nearly $1 billion), Snapchat, Wanelo, Kik and 4chan.
